Located in Nainital district, of Uttar Pradesh in India, is the Corbett National Park and Tiger Reserve. Established in 1936, as Hailey National Park, the park supports the rich variety of vegetation making the ideal habitat for the wilds. Corbett was once the haunting preserve of the British royals. It was named in honor of the late Jim Corbett, the legendary hunter who later on turned into a author and a enthusiast photographer. He spent most of his life in the jungle and contributed in setting up the this park. Flora :

Corbett National Park has the vast stretches Sal forests mainly in the lower regions. The higher regions have a larger variety of plants and trees. Some of these are the Chir (Pinus roxburghii), anauri (Legestroemia paruiflora) and Bakli (Anogeissus latifolia). Also found in various parts of the park are many different varieties of bamboo. One plant, (actually a weed) which is a major irritant to the park authorities and is widespread in the jungle is the Lantana.

Fauna :

Corbett National Park is renowned for the variety of wildlife especially the tigers. Apart from Tigers,elephants, Leopards / Panthers, Jungle cats, Fishing Cats, Leopard cats, Himalayan black bears, Sloth bears, Jackals, Martens, Dholes, Civets, Mongooses, Otters, Hares, Porcupines, Chital (spotted deer), Hog deer, Barking deer, Ghorals, Wild Boars, Pangolins, Macaques, Langurs and Blue Bulls (Nilgais) are some of the species which are found here.


Avifauna :

Corbet is paradise for for bird lovers. Some of the commonly found birds in the jungle include Crested Serpent Eagle, the Black-winged Kite, the Indian Shikra, the Himalayan Grey-headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Vultures, Lesser and Greater Spotted Eagles, Hawk-Eagles, the Crested Honey Buzzard, Osprey, the Peregrine Falcon, the Booted Hawk- Eagle , the Steppe Eagle and the Black Eagle.

Nature Walk :


Rise at the dawn, with the first cup of tea, inhale deeply, breathing in the smell of fresh air, and listen to the jungles what they say. There's nothings more reviving than a leisure walk amidst the forest along with the forest guide, to built an appetite for the huge breakfast. Exploring the forests by foot gives you better insight of the jungle and let you discover its riches, still unexplored.

Birding :

Birding enthusiasts, do come to Corbett for a date with Indian Shikra, the Large Pied Wagtai, White-capped Redstart and the Hawk eagles. There are over hundred species inhabited here. A good pair of binoculars and Salim Ali's book of Indian birds are worth taking along. One may find some of the rare and endangered species of birds during the Ramganga River. A number of high altitude birds can also be spotted here during the winters.

Shake off your languor, by freaking out in the jungle in the open Gypsy. Get a ticket and find yourself a guide. There are a lot of paths to be explored in the sanctuary.
